Par Akram OUBACHIR | Edition N°:6975 Le 21/03/2025 | Partager

The value of Spanish exports to Morocco reached €12.8 billion in 2024, marking an increase of over 73% compared to 2020, a year that saw a slowdown and declining trade trends due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the latest figures from Spain’s Ministry of Economy and Trade, reviewed by L’Économiste.

In 2022 and 2023, Spanish exports to Morocco amounted to €10.3 billion and €11.2 billion, respectively, according to the 2023 foreign trade report from Morocco’s Foreign Exchange Office. During these periods, Spain remained Morocco’s primary European importer, the same source adds.

For the past year, the main categories of Spanish products exported to Morocco included fuels (18%), mechanical appliances (12%), vehicles (11%), electrical equipment (9%), and plastics (6%).

According to Spain’s Ministry of Economy and Trade, in its report titled Spain-Morocco Bilateral Relations 2024, Spanish imports from Morocco reached €9.8 billion in 2024. The Foreign Exchange Office reported that imports stood at €9.6 billion in 2023 and €8.4 billion in 2022.

These imports primarily consisted of electrical equipment (30%), non-knitted garments (15%), vehicles (12%), fish (9%), and fruits (6%).

Spain is therefore both Morocco’s top importer and exporter within the European Union (EU), surpassing countries such as France, Morocco’s historically significant economic partner.

Third Largest Non-EU Customer

For Spain, Morocco ranks as its seventh-largest global customer and third outside the EU, behind the United States and the United Kingdom—two of the world’s largest economies. In 2023, Morocco was Spain’s ninth-largest customer.

«In 2024, sales to Morocco accounted for 3.34% of Spain’s total global exports, setting a historic record,» the Ministry stated in its report, emphasizing that Rabat remains Spain’s primary African client.

«Sales to Morocco represented 61% of Spain’s total exports to the African continent and 79% of its sales to North Africa in 2024,» the report added.

During the same period, Spain’s imports from Morocco accounted for 2.32% of its total national imports, breaking another record. However, the total revenue from these imports was not specified in the report.

Morocco is Spain’s tenth-largest global supplier and fourth-largest outside the EU, following China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 2023, Morocco ranked 11th but moved up, surpassing countries like Turkey.

On the African continent, Morocco is Spain’s top supplier (28%), followed by Algeria (18%) and Nigeria (16%). Additionally, 47% of Spain’s total imports from North Africa originate from Morocco.
